Syed Rezwanul Islam has completed a Master degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of New Orleans. His specialization was in transportation planning and engineering. He has obtained a Bachelor degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He is currently supervising a multi-disciplinary team of urban planners, environmental scientists and engineers. His research primarily focuses on multiple aspects of urbanization and their interactions. He is interested in three core aspects – transportation, environment and landuse – of urban planning. As an Urban Planner he has worked in multiple facets of urban planning such as transportation planning and engineering, environmental planning, community development, climate change adaptation and disaster management. 

As a graduate student, Mr. Islam conducted research related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). His thesis aimed at proposing alternative route choice to reduce environmental impacts using Intelligent Transportation Systems. Apart from his professional engagements, he is actively involved in generating research ideas and proposals related to sustainable transportation system.

Mr. Islam started his professional career as a GIS specialist. He worked in a World Bank funded project in Chittagong that intended to extend CWASA provided water supply lines for the city. He has worked in the USA with Center for Hazards Assessment, Response & Technology (CHART), Jefferson Parish Planning Department and University of New Orleans in various positions. After coming back to Bangladesh, he has been working with the Disaster Management Watch. As a Deputy Manager, He has been engaged in several projects with renowned national and international organization such as Save the Children, Concern Worldwide, UNDP, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, SEEP, Plan International etc. Some of his responsibilities were preparing research proposal, developing methodological framework, preparing tools, data quality assurance and analysis, spatial analysis using GIS, report preparation, arranging workshops and presenting in public meetings.
